Sausage and apple stuffed mushrooms are loaded with savory ground sausage, sweet shredded apple, fragrant sage, and smoky gouda cheese all piled into tender button mushrooms. They come together in under 45 minutes and are the kind of appetizer that vanishes off the tray every single time!
1teaspoonground sageor 1 tablespoon very finely minced fresh sage
1teaspoonkosher salt
1cupshredded smoked gouda cheeseplus extra for the tops
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400℉ and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Add the prepared mushrooms (opening side up) to the pan.
18 button mushrooms
Add a large skillet to the stove over medium heat. Add the ground sausage and break it up constantly as it cooks, making sure they’re crumbled into small pieces and get nice and brown.
8 ounces ground sausage
Add the onion, garlic, apple, sage, and salt to the sausage pan and cook until the onions are translucent and everything is very fragrant. Don’t let the garlic brown too much. Remove from the heat and cool (or transfer to a large bowl to speed up the process).
½ cup finely diced yellow onion, 3 cloves garlic finely minced, 1 cup shredded apple, 1 teaspoon ground sage, 1 teaspoon kosher salt
Add the shredded gouda and mix until evenly distributed.
1 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese
Scoop the mixture into the mushrooms, pressing it down, then adding a bit more and creating a small mound in each mushroom.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of each mushroom.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until the mushrooms are cooked through and the tops are nice and browned.
Notes
Store any leftover stuffed mushrooms in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, add them to a 375℉ oven for about 8-10 minutes until warmed through and the cheese gets melty again. You can also microwave them for 30-45 seconds, but the oven method keeps the texture much better.
